Mirjam Hlastan was born in 1984 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
After graduating from Secondary School for Design and Photography, Ljubljana, she wrote/directed and produced her first short film “Color Blindness” which screened at the international film festival in New York City.
In 2005, she realized her second short film “Daydreaming” and took a year-long job as a video editor at a local TV station. Later on, she focused on pursuing her passion for directing, writing and producing so she started working as a freelance filmmaker.
In 2007 she worked as a video editor for Animateka International Animated Film Festival and went through projectionist training at the local art cinema Kindvor.
In 2008, she directed, wrote and edited a music video "Dance" for an acclaimed Slovenian rapper and hip-hop artist Trkaj in co-production with RTV Slovenija - the only national broadcaster. That same year, during the production break on an award-winning stop-motion animation film “Kiddo-Slingshot” where she worked as an assistant director, she was selected for and attended 2nd Sarajevo Talent Campus as a talented film director.
In 2009 she won a music video pitch and directed, wrote and edited a music video "Can't stop the rain" for a single from a first solo album by an international nu-disco star Shèna, which was produced by Division Productions.
To truly understand the entire scope of movie and TV production process, she took on roles of the director, writer, producer, camerawoman, editor, PA, AD and an extra collaborating with acclaimed directors (Ven Jemersic, Kolja Saksida), producers (Branislav Srdic, Amir Muireskic) studios (Viba Film, VPK), production companies (A Atalanta, ZVVIKS, Arkadena) and broadcasters (RTV Slovenija, POP TV, TV3).
After working on over 100+ creative projects, she decided to pursue her personal and professional development and goals abroad.
In 2011 she moved to Berlin, Germany.
On the short film “The Spray“, produced and directed by a German director Uwe Flade, she excelled working as a production manager assistant securing further work on various tv commercials.
Despite her work track record, in 2015, she still took an internship position taking place at the Berlinale, since she considered assisting UK film producer Raza Mallal from TalkingLense Productions to be an invaluable opportunity to learn more about the world-known film festival.
During the years 2016 and 2017 she expanded her understanding of film business and film festival circuits even further by working the stand with Slovenian film center at the European film market.
In 2017 she was selected to participate as a talent at 5th Innsbruck Film Campus.
The next year she learned at the TechOpenAir - 360 Video filming and streaming workshop taking place at the START UP GUIDE store and media.think.tank "film - innovation - economics" conference at the Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf.
In 2019 she volunteered as a Helping Hand at Re:publica + Media Convention festival and attended a masterclass NEXT STEPS “International producing“ with award-winning film producer Marleen Slot.
Feeding her never-ending curiosity and desire to grow as a filmmaker and a business person, she regularly attends events organized by the FilmTechOffice, Factory Berlin and The Family.
Her work has been selected by the BLOW-UP International Arthouse FILM FEST Chicago, Tirana International Film Festival, Festival of Slovenian Film, ILLUMINATE Film Festival, Szczecin Film Festival, China Women Film Festival, The Lift-Off Sessions and Cannes Film Festival - Short Film Corner.
She is a member of the Federal Association of German Film Directors (BVR), Filmnetzwerk Berlin and Crew-United.
At the moment, she is living and working in Berlin.
