Director Statement

If someone asked if my mind was a genre, what would it be? I would say it's coming-of-age. I always like the coming-of-age story because it offers adventure, freedom, and expressiveness. From the coming-of-age stories, I got a lot of answers to my own questions about myself. It helps me to know myself better. In 2016, for the first time, I listened to "Fairytale." The song is interesting. It gives an adventure-fantasy sense. Out of curiosity, I searched about this song and found the artist's statement, "It's a childlike way to experience things - just wandering around. It's a bit naïve." I think it has a similarity to the coming-of-age story.

"And just like the moon, we must go through phases of emptiness to feel full again." sums up the whole concept of this lyric video. The Moon phase represents the young boy's journey to discover himself. I wanted to convey the premise and the symbolism in surreal visuals. An animated music video is the best option for it. In my opinion, Animation has the advantage of creating scenes as surreal as possible but still visually pleasing and acceptable. Also, it allows me to have more control over the scenes.

It's fun to convey messages through symbolism. It opens up a lot of interpretation possibilities. The same goes for music and its lyrics. That's the reason why I like music video.
