Brooklyn born to Boricua parents, Mikey fuels his artistic drive by chronicling the narratives of struggle and triumph through a variety of formats and platforms as a transmedia storyteller and creative agitator. A 2nd generation Nuyorican and Brooklyn Native, Mikey has dedicated himself to preserving and celebrating the culture of the Puerto Rican Diaspora. As Co-Founder of the Defend Puerto Rico Media Collective, Mikey narrates the story of Boricua identity and resistance through a multimedia movement sparking action and awareness.
His recent directorial work "For Those to Come" garnered critical acclaim and a rousing response from audiences, the film was awarded the prestigious Best Documentary Feature title at the Puerto Rico Film Festival in 2022. With its thought-provoking storytelling and emotional resonance, this award-winning documentary is a must-watch for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Puerto Rican history and its quest for climate and environmental justice. Released in 2021, his short documentary "War Against Our Schools" represents another significant addition to his already impressive body of work. With his distinct storytelling style and impeccable attention to detail, Cordero paints an authentic portrait of the challenges and triumphs encountered on the frontlines of Puerto Rico’s education system. 2021 also saw more film accolades as the feature documentary “We Still Here” produced and edited by Mikey garnered multiple awards like Best Doc at the International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival and the Audience award at the Urbanworld Film Festival
His documentary photography has been featured in numerous publications and was sought out and featured by Spike Lee for his recent Netflix series She’s Gotta Have it Too. Mikey produced the web series East WillyB - a satirical take on a Brooklyn community engulfed with gentrification and cultural ramifications.
He spent over 10 years developing and directing youth programs in the arts education non-profit sector of NYC. Mikey co-founded Scope of Work (S.O.W) which creates a creative space for young talent in NY to thrive in by providing resources, real world experience, and mentor relationships. Mikey is currently serving as Director of New Media at the Caribbean Culture Center African Diaspora Institute.
By sharing personal stories of culture, through a variety of mediums, Mikey inspires connectivity and initiates action. Presently he lives, creates and documents from Carolina,Puerto Rico.
