Director Biography - Brandon Rivera

Brandon Rivera has wanted to be a film director since he was five years old. He made his first feature as a Christmas card when he was 19. In 2017 he created a YouTube channel to create film reviews, vlogs, skits and shorts. However, this always took a back seat to full time jobs. After the Covid-19 Pandemic began, he decided that life was too short and film making had too steep of a learning curve. He decided to dedicate the rest of his life to full time film making. Unsure of what the future holds, he is pressing forward with several series on his YouTube channel, hoping to grow his experience and have a life long journey as a film maker.

Director Statement

There are many Halloween fan films, but we hope ours stands out in a few ways. This all started two years ago when my little brother, Liam, said "Wouldn't it be cool if we made a short film where Michael Myers was after me and Ava?!" From here, he and I sat and wrote an entire fan film that tried to take some of our favorite elements of the franchise, and the genre. First, we wanted to make a horror comedy. Horror comedy always runs the risk of confusing the audience and making them uncomfortable. They often don't know what to feel. However, horror that doesn't take itself too seriously always struck us as some of the most enjoyable media. An American Werewolf in London, Evil Dead 2, Stranger Things, Super 8. Scary movies with a sense of humor. Next, we wanted my 7 year old sister to be the main character. We always loved Halloween 4, and felt that was one direction rarely taken by the franchise and by fan films. With a zero dollar budget, we gathered supplies we had from past Halloween seasons, and got to shooting. Due to constraints, we cut a third of the movie, (almost the entire second act) and reworked the entire third act. This amounted to a movie that is longer than a short, but shorter than a feature. Friends and family put a lot of pressure on me to reshoot the deleted third and restore our little movie to what it was originally intended. But I like the final product we created. It's creepy, funny, a bit meta, and a little sentimental. It's not perfect, it's certainly not for everyone, but we hope Halloween and horror comedy fans like us enjoy it as much as we do.
