Miami-Cuba
"If you want to be universal, sing your village", said Leo Tolstoy.
Miami-Cuba is an audiovisual immersion through the Historic Center of João Pessoa, with brief trips through symbolic places on its shore. In particular, the recently verticalized Altiplano neighborhood, where its current urban development project seems to be heading.
Its cinematographic device is the occupation of an apartment in the "18 Andar" building, the first "skyscraper" and the initial landmark of the capital's modernization. A work that is also configured as a kind of sentinel in this central region of the city, listed as a historical heritage shortly after its construction. In this way, the film ends up being the result of drifts through its surroundings, other locations in this center, as well as the beach. During six months, including research, pre-production and recording, the director and part of the technical team experienced this artistic-immersive process.
A performative documentary that walks with pre-researched characters and others that were found on the recording journey... Expressive people from the city of Parahyba, known and/or anonymous, who ramble on about their urban experiences, ways of living, coexisting, existing and resist. Reverberating local problems that gain a universal dimension, such as the issue of eviction from the centenary riverside community Porto Capim.
It intends to be a kind of reflective essay not only about the striking architectural dichotomy between downtown and the waterfront of João Pessoa, and how much this speaks about its history of modernization. It is also about the political, economic, social, cultural, etc. nuances involved in it.
Miami-Cuba can also be seen as an affective, spatial and historical cartography of the art-city life, which has gained even more power and layers in this pandemic context, where everyone needs to reinvent themselves in this capitalist system in evident decay, urban bankruptcy, exile… It is a film that fables about the need to re-enchant the world from the fullness of being and being in community, and not from having and individualizing oneself in the city.
