Director Statement

"Men of the Dust" was the first documentary that I entirely self-produced without the help of any crew. My motivations for the project originally arose out of my desire to document dying or peculiar crafts within Ireland, as Victor is one of only a handful still stone carving through the traditional ancient Celtic methods.

As the story progressed and I grew closer to Victor, the deep spiritual and emotional foundations behind him and his craft emerged. I then decided to channel my thematic focus on death, the grieving process and the nature of nostalgia and memory.

This documentary served as my thesis film for my final year of studies at the Film and Screen Media department at University College Cork.
