Director Statement

Memory is an animal which barks with various mouths — based on the formation of war-oriented identity in Russia and full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. For the past quarter-century, Putin's regime has deftly utilized historical events and the past to nurture a resurgence of Russian imperialist ideology and politics. The indelible connection between contemporary Russia and its purported 'thousand-year' history has been instrumental in legitimizing the regime's claim as the historical successor to both the Russian empire and the Soviet Union. Through the artful manipulation of collective memory, a triumphant national narrative has been meticulously constructed, wherein paramilitary courage and patriotism have come to define mainstream culture and daily life. Film seeks to unmask the layers of governmental manipulation and mainstream narratives, ultimately peeling back the curtain to reveal the personal memories of individuals and families, hidden beneath the veneer of official propaganda. In doing so, it aspires to bridge the generational gap in how we remember and which historical events stay in our collective consciousness.
