  • Hello Melbourne Live,

I'm honored that my screenplay "Fair Youth" was selected as a 2024 award winner for Best Drama Screenplay. Please accept my humble thanks for this recognition!

The "Fair Youth" screenplay is an adaptation of my novel of the same title which is being published this summer along with my memoir "Ghostwriter." Both books will be available in Australia soon.

    All the best from Mississippi!

    Larry Wells

GHOSTWRITER: Shakespeare, Literary Landmines and an Eccentric Patron's Royal Obsession, nonfiction, by Lawrence Wells (University Press of Mississippi, 216 pages, illus., $28.00 hardcover, ISBN 9781496852434)

FAIR YOUTH, a novel by Lawrence Wells (Sanctuary Editions, 248 pages) $24.95, paperback, ISBN 9780916242930)

Pub-date for both books: July 15, 2024. Books available in Australia

Ghostwriter, creative nonfiction, is the story of Wells being hired by the University of Mississippi to ghostwrite "Fair Youth," a novel, for a potential donor (the late Gertrude C. Ford) for a planned $10m performing arts center. “Mrs. F” was convinced that Edward de Vere, 17th or Oxford, was William Shakespeare, and that she was the reincarnation of de Vere's alleged mistress, Queen Elizabeth I. ("A rich and amusing literary memoir with a conspiratorial twist.“ Kirkus Reviews)

Fair Youth, a fictional sequel to Wells' "Ghostwriter," is the novel that Wells ghostwrites for “Mrs. F.” It is a mystery about the legend that a romance between Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, Lord Great Chamberlain, and Queen Elizabeth I, produced a son, Henry, born in secret but who, in real life, is universally acknowledged as the “Fair Youth” of Shakespeare’s Sonnets. When Queen Elizabeth refuses to acknowledge Henry as her heir, he joins the Essex Rebellion and makes a vain attempt to seize the throne. He is sentenced to death but Elizabeth leaves orders for his sentence to be commuted.

Lawrence Wells' novel "Fair Youth" was recently named a finalist in the 2024 Hawthorne fiction competition.
