Meeting Caronte

Angélica, a workaholic architect, wakes up disoriented in a room and finds Caronte, a detached man who’s simply noting her information on a clipboard. Shocked, she discovers she’s dead and tries to escape, only to always end up back in the same place. Gradually, Caronte softens as she reflects on life, and in comforting her, he starts questioning his own mechanical role. Together, they face farewell and the unknown, while Caronte learns to go beyond merely “doing his job.”

Director Statement

"I wrote this script during the pandemic, a time when the proximity of death became a tangible reality. This short film explores mourning oneself, accepting the life we’ve lived, and questioning what it truly means to ‘live.’ Through Angélica and Caronte’s journey, I wanted to challenge the immediate and capitalist view of a ‘good life,’ offering a moment to reflect on our choices and the freedom we find when we let go of regrets.

Visually, I chose a disorienting camera style and a slower-paced edit, creating a reflective space and a sense of suspended time. The color palette differentiates the characters: Angélica in warm tones, representing life and restlessness; Caronte in cool, calming tones, like someone who transcends time. Our original soundtrack intensifies emotions, and its absence at key moments deepens Angélica’s inner emptiness.

This creative process was collaborative, and I hope that, through watching, the audience reflects on their own relationships with life and death, finding comfort in the idea that things simply are—and, in time, cease to be.
