Meet The Metahumans

Meet The Metahumans – is a Low Budget film, made by two Disabled filmmakers.

It's a live action, sci-fi, fantasy, slapstick, dark comedy set in a late 1980’s Cyberworld. The Metahumans are gaming Influencers who love playing retrogames, and they've just got their hands on a game called ‘Game Over’. A new console VR game that’s just been exclusively released.

A game that features.. Humans as the game characters, roaming around game levels, set in real places, Bristol and London, in the here and now.

What could possibly go wrong? Will this be really Game Over for humanity? This short film is about Metahumans, Humanity and Grief.

The filming took place during the Coronavirus Pandemic, during a lockdown and once the world opened up a bit more.

The original music soundtrack style is late 80’s – early 90’s Synthwave and console games styled music, all within an immersive cinematic Dolby Atmos mix.

This short film has many twists and turns, it’s co-produced/directed by two critically acclaimed Autistic disabled Filmmakers from Bristol, England – Michael Smith and Sam Downie.

The film is a mix of live action shot in HDR on Sony Cameras, on location in Bristol and London, along with CGI, VFX and the Metahumans created in Unreal Engine 4.

The original music score and soundtrack is fully immersive, exclusively mixed in Dolby Atmos for Cinema and Headphones, in Binaural & 7.1.2 , mixed and produced using Logic Pro and the Dolby Atmos Renderer.

Both Sam Downie and Michael Smith, via our short film – Meet The Metahumans – are disabled filmmakers supported by the Dolby Institute Fellowship.

Sam Downie is a Disabled Autistic film director and Actor who is known for a number of short films that he has directed over the years, a few of which have been long-listed for BAFTA's.

He is also a Content Creator among other things, such as a Dolby Atmos mix engineer and designer, Voice-over, Voice-Actor, a self-shooter Cinematographer, editor on Final Cut Pro, Presenter and Podcaster, a Storyteller and a Disability Rights Advocate and Ambassador.

His previous short films include "Unique Human", and "The Mystery" for the Different Voices Film project with Biggerhouse Film / 104 Films.

His current film projects include "Dawn of the DarkFox" which is ongoing, and Meet the Meta Humans (to be released in Summer, 2022).

He has been working with disability film production companies to develop film projects, such as the Different Voices Neurodiversity Film project from Biggerhouse Film and 104 Films the leaders in Disability Films for Cinema and TV.

His films have been screened at Sheffield Doc/Fest, the Watershed, the Arnolfini cinema, as well as at events such as Epilepsy Awareness Day at Disneyland Resort in the USA, for which he is an Ambassador for.

Sam has achieved what many filmmakers aspire to do, which is, to develop, shoot, edit and screen award-winning films, using a combination of skills, talent and techniques.

Michael Smith is an autistic film director and actor who is known for a number of short films that he has directed over the years, a few of which has won awards. He is also a Content Creator among other things, such as artist, animator and story teller.

His previous films are Walls Around my Heart, Light and Dark, and My Difference.

His current film projects include Dawn of the DarkFox (ongoing), A Moment of your Time (Finished) and Meet the Meta Humans (to be released in Summer, 2022).

He has been working with disability film production companies such as Film 104, Biggerhouse Film and DSoundZ Media Films, case example being Different Voices, an ongoing film talent development programme for emerging autistic film makers and creatives from the Bristol area.

His alter ego is the DarkFox.
