Me and My Teeth
Follow filmmaker Anna Quon as she journeys from a childhood conviction regarding her own specialness, symbolized by her “perfect” teeth, into the throes of mental unwellness, where she learns the harsh reality facing those who unlike her, have no supports.
Anna questions the societal and systemic neglect of, and prejudice against, those with poor mental and dental health, and begins to grapple with her own human vulnerability and need for support.
A visual collage of stills and super 8 home movie footage, live action and animation composed of original drawings, Victorian etchings and found images, Me and my Teeth alternates between the dreamy and bleak, the lyrical and humourous. Quon’s evocative monologue, at once uniquely personal and compellingly universal, concludes with a poetic reflection on our human need for one another.
