Director Statement

For a ten-year-old kid who shared a room with their older sister, the day my parents brought home a second-hand bed from a neighbour’s hard rubbish was the most exciting day ever…I was going to get my own room! My older sister and I peered down the corridor as my parents squeezed the
bed in through the front door. When I looked to my sister, the look of excitement I expected to share with her was instead one of unease. She had realised sooner than I had that this new bed wasn’t for me, but for our Mum and Dad to have two separate bedrooms.

This memory came to signify the beginning of my family unit’s collapse. As soon as I learned my family was unhappy together, but committed to staying under the same roof, it became impossible to separate their conflict and happiness from mine.

With an imaginary friend desperately clinging to life, Me, My Ralph and I explores a young girl’s struggle to retain a sense of self amongst the pressure to grow up as fast as her growing sense of responsibility.
