Maximapark - from Greenhouses to a Living Landscape
Film Máximapark - from Greenhouses to a Living Landscape
In the heart of the Randstad lies a unique part of the Netherlands: the Máximapark. Only 25 years ago, it was still inhabited by market gardeners; today, it is a vibrant, green icon of modern landscape architecture and community spirit. The film Máximapark takes viewers on a visual journey through the past, present, and future of this remarkable area.
From its roots in greenhouse horticulture and the surprising archaeological discoveries from Roman times, to the carefully designed landscape where rare flora and fauna have found their place — the park is a living mosaic of nature, history, and culture. Volunteers from diverse backgrounds work side by side to maintain and nurture this young yet meaningful place.
The film Máximapark is a tribute to the power of collaboration, the importance of heritage, and the beauty of a landscape in which humans and nature strengthen one another.

They pursue their work with devotion, joy, and extraordinary energy. Themes such as “never too old”, “dare to show yourself”, “stay resilient”, and “self-confidence” are addressed. Growing old has advantages, as our 91-year-old swimming champion tells us.

The last professional bird ranger of Staatsbosbeheer, Oene de Jong, takes us into this extraordinary world set in a stunning, dynamic landscape. Former wardens share their stories, enriched with unique historical footage, philosophical anecdotes, and beautiful time-lapse images. The film reveals the cultural and historical importance of birdwatching heritage on this Wadden Island.
