Director Biography - Brett Udal, Michael Sibanda

Brett Udal has been the Director of Music at Hilton College since his appointment in 2009. Originally a classically trained violinist with a B.Mus HDE from the University of Pretoria and UNISA, he previously worked professionally in the New Arts Philharmonic Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra (1995-1998). In 1999, he started teaching Music full-time at St. Stithians' Boys College as the Head of Music and later appointed the Director of Music at Beaulieu College until 2007 when he moved to Hilton College. He has been teaching subject music in IEB schools for almost twenty years and in 2015, won the Apple in Excellence Award category: 'iTunes U in the classroom.

Director Statement

The Hilton College competition marimba band was started in 2009 and has subsequently developed into an internationally recognised and award-winning band. The band has won multiple awards at Education Africa's International Steel Pan and Marimba Festival each year, most notably winning 'Best Overall Marimba Band' in 2018.

In 2019, the marimba band's performance of "Drive', as originally performed by the collaborative effort between Black Coffee/David Guetta, went viral around the world. Both Black Coffee and David Guetta tweeted the video in recognition of the band's effort.
