Mathius Marvellous Shop is the second film of the artistic pair Álvarez- Escorihuela who has been carrying out all kinds of artistic projects in Berlin for more than a decade. A time in which they have obtained a master's degree in self-management by means of musical shows, cabaret-theatre, television, radio, multimedia and films.
In 2015 they founded the production company Paola Álvarez Filmproduktion. In 2016 they released their first film "Der Nowak" and recently they begun to get involved with the executive production of other projects (16 de Decembro, by Alvaro Gago, which has just been released in Locarno). Its aim is to find a space for different films, far from any kind of rule or preconceived ideas: free films.
Der Nowak, shot in 16mm in autumn 2015, premiered at festivals in Berlin (Punk Film Fest, Fieber Festival), Barcelona (Craft Film Fest) and Madrid (Rizoma) and won honourable mentions in Los Angeles and Manaos.
Mathius Marvellous Shop (MMS) is a futuristic comedy with a strong feminist and experimental character that crosses the thin line between good and evil from a new perspective. The great questions of life are deale through a dystopian society in which costumbrism, modernity and magic coexist.
We speak of MMS as a feminist project because it is a film of feminist women and men. MMS puts feminism at the centre of the story by building a multiple female character where the great protagonist and the secondary female roles, tackling problems, perspectives and options of different women in different generations. The legend of spanish independent and feminist cinema, Cecilia Bartolome, is inspiration and seed in the reality and fiction of MMS. We use some of her work from the 80´s and she plays one of the funniest roles in a key scene of the movie.
We speak of MMS as an experimental project understanding that the central experiment is the creation of a comedy - a priori conventional - crossed by a string of avant-garde treatments ranging from interpretation, the treatment of set art, visual effects, music, fashion, architecture and even comedy itself. The result is a multidisciplinary with a common purpose - to reflect on utopian societies and dystopia, on the limits of action for the supposed common good and the final essence of good and evil.
