Marriage Crisis

In the true heart of Irbid city lives Simsim, a 26-year-old woman residing with her mother and young daughter. She works at a photography studio, striving to support her family after separating from her husband, Qasem, who refuses to grant her a divorce.

Simsim’s father had chosen Qasem as her husband, firmly believing that “our daughters don’t get divorced,” pushing her into a marriage she never wanted. She felt nothing but repulsion toward Qasem—a simple man who runs a modest chicken shop and lacks the ambition or intellect to improve his life or business.

Longing for happiness, like many young women, Simsim once believed it lay in marrying a wealthy or well-traveled man who could offer her a better life. After repeated attempts to convince Qasem to divorce her, he finally agrees—on one strange condition: she must find him a new wife.

Simsim accepts the challenge and begins using the photography studio as her base to search for a suitable bride for Qasem, launching her into a series of bizarre adventures. Over time, she realizes that the true solution isn’t to escape or find another man, but to focus on raising her daughter and embracing her mother’s wisdom. In doing so, Simsim ultimately finds real happiness within herself and her family.

Marriage Crisis” tells the story of Simsim, a woman from Irbid who struggles against the societal challenges imposed by traditions on women’s ambitions, particularly in a culture that likens marriage to a cage. Blending drama with documentary elements, the film explores the internal and external conflicts faced by Jordanian women as they navigate between self-fulfillment and societal pressures. Rooted in real experiences, the film presents an authentic portrayal of women’s lives in Jordan, utilizing visual metaphors such as the water tank and parrots to symbolize the tension between individuality and commitment. Through dark comedy, it sheds light on life-altering decisions and their impact, aiming to redefine the notions of happiness and independence for women.
