Sami Mustonen was born in 1988 in Oulu, Finland. Mustonen is a film director and cinematographer while working also as a 3D visualization specialist. He has worked for one of the biggest advertising agencies in Finland and been involved in countless commercials, along with making visual effects for several shorts and full feature films. 'Marras' is his debut short film.
I have always been intrigued by the forgotten times – especially the times through humankind’s ancient history to the medieval era. The narrow and even brutal view of the world from those times allows endless possibilities to craft stories. Day-to-day activities reflected the supernatural beliefs; women’s rights were poor and child mortality rates high; and anyone standing out with unaccepted behavior or looks were disregarded and discriminated.
From these realities sets up the short film Marras. It is a story about a child's journey through loneliness and letting go. The undiscovered Nordic landscape acts as an unforgiving setting in a fight for life, but in the end, the true battle for survival is fought in her mind. To let go of the past is difficult, yet evident to move on – otherwise, the weight on the shoulders may keep her from taking yet another step.
