‘Mark of the Beast’ aims to explore how external judgements about women’s sexuality can be internalized by women. Mary is striving to achieve an ideal, but the ideal woman she longs to be is a dichotomy: She is desirable but not promiscuous, chaste but not prude. Mary finds she cannot be all of these things at once and is left feeling unsatisfied, feeling as though she has violated herself in her performance.
