Maria I Need Your Lovin'
2017: Documentary photographer Martijn van de Griendt has just released his first documentary ever. A film about the girl Maria.
He started ten years ago taking polaroids of Maria, whom he met on the streets of his hometown Eindhoven (the south of the Netherlands).
One year later he bought a videocamera and started his very first documentary.
Together with the film he releases a photobook about Maria, containing a large selection of his polaroids/Impossible pictures that he took over the past nine years.
Martijn van de Griendt:
‘I've been following Maria since she was eighteen. I met her in my hometown of Eindhoven in 2007, when I was working on my photobook Smokin' Boys Smokin' Girls. But Maria didn't smoke cigarettes, she smoked dope. She uses different sorts of drugs. Her life has been an extraordinary one. Born in Brazil, and adopted as a child, she spent years in children's homes and youth detention centres.
You could compare Maria’s life with the Polaroid’s I make of her, as she is just as vulnerable as the material. Maria’s life is beyond all bounds. Polaroid is limited.‘
