Mancala
After a series of suspicious explosions at various bauxite mining operations around the world, the global industry comes to a standstill. An intern from the head office of a major multinational corporation suspects her employer is trying to control the global Aluminium industry. With mining sites located predominantly in the Caribbean & Africa, it becomes apparent the corporation will strive to succeed without any regard for their workers or communities who live where bauxite mining must take place. Eventually leaders from these bauxite producing countries decide to work together to fight neo-colonial oppression by forming a co-operative business cartel, only to face the true face of the corporation, which is more sinister than anyone expected.
“Mancala” is a fictional political thriller written and produced by Obediya Jones-Darrell about the impact of the mining industry on environmental justice for workers and people throughout the Caribbean & Africa. With themes that transcend borders and cultures, “Mancala” is a story of resistance and strength that rings true for any community with a valuable natural resource.

Obediya is a prolific Writer, Music Composer and Producer with a diverse portfolio of award winning works in mediums such as Film, Theatre, Opera, Audiobooks, Animation and Radio Drama. He strives to create art that relates to his own life experiences. By sharing his work with the world, his goal is for others to see a piece of themselves within his art.
The first draft of this script was chosen as an official selection of the "The Working Lives Screenplay Competition" in the Workers Unite Film Festival in NYC, 2018.
The script was then adapted as a Radio Drama, and recorded with a full cast of performers based in Canada, United States, the Caribbean and Africa in 2018.
We then created this 3 minute moc news report, which would take place at the beginning of the story.
Our next step is to develop the full 100+ page script into a feature film and multimedia stage play.
