Director Biography - Praveen Semwal

Praveen Semwal is a director hailing from a remote higher Himalayan village. His passion for storytelling and interest in the stories based in this region drew him towards filmmaking. Praveen pursued his graduation in engineering from Uttarakhand but his passion for filmmaking was so intense that he taught himself the craft of filmmaking in the absence of a professional environment for cinema.

Praveen's debut in filmmaking came during his graduation when he created a short commercial for Gatsby, which went on to represent India at the global level in Japan. During his college days in a remote hilly region, Praveen came across an interesting story of students struggling due to geography and lack of resources. This experience laid the foundation for his debut feature-length documentary film, which explores the lives of students living in remote areas and the challenges they face to get an education.

With his debut film, Praveen Semwal showcases his unique perspective and strong voice as a director. His passion for filmmaking and his ability to tell compelling stories make him a director to watch out for in the future.

Director Statement

My debut feature length documentary film is a heartfelt exploration of the struggles and achievements of engineering students from remote hilly regions in India, where opportunities are scarce and resources are limited. Inspired by my own journey as a filmmaker in a similar environment, I was drawn to these students' tenacity and perseverance in pursuing their dreams despite daunting challenges.

Through their stories, my film not only highlights the intense competition and determination among engineering students, but also sheds light on the broader struggle of people from hilly regions who are often marginalized in mainstream society due to geographical and infrastructural disadvantages. By documenting the students' journey of competing on a national level, I aim to showcase the resilience and resourcefulness of human beings in overcoming the odds to achieve their goals.
