Experiencing Interruptions?

Ma. Na. - The documentary

This film is based on the life and work of Mr. Madhav Narayan Kulkarani from the Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra state. Born and brought in the small village called Dundage mr. kulkarani trained to be a professor and started working at the college based in belgavi city. He got influenced by the works of M. Gandhi and left his job to join the 1942’s “ chale jao” movement. As a educationist he deeply believed in the ideas of Gandhi regarding achievement of self sufficient villages through “ Mulbhut Shikshan “ and sustainable development. To execute this idea, mr. kulkarani headed back to his native village and planned to start the educational institute which would run according to the gandhian principles. He arrived at his village and expressed his desire in front of some village elites. They are also aware of the hurdles village students face to get the secondary education by travelling 10km daily to nearby town. The main problem was of the lack of sufficient funds. So to generate the funds mr. kulkarani appealed villagers to donate whatever amount they could. The first donation came from uneducated dalit old man and it inspired all others to carry forward the cause. Mr. kulkarani successfully started the school and applied gandhian methods of education. This documentry tries to unveil this journey through critical lenses. Later on how and why gandhian methods started fading out from the educational structure of the school. How the aspects like caste , Gender, Classism , uncertain environmental condition affected the rural education during the time of freedom struggle and aftermath the independence.

Director Statement

During school days i was involved more into the cultural activities. After writing and directing one sit com play in 9th class i got inclined towards the performing art and eventually cinema. But following the tradition of my rural locality I enrolled to study the science. During my studies at Pune i switched my course to mass media from science.
This field was totally unknown for me. During initial days I had to struggle just to learn English. My photography teacher Mr. Sandeep Dongare was the reason I started thinking critically about filmmaking. After his departure only library and free film screening at NFAI became my source to learn more about cinema. After assisting my seniors i learnt few basics. In 2017 i made my first short film which was rejected due to technical inadequacy. But i continued making films with available budget and resources. Finally this year my documentary got nominated in competitive category at ‘’ Swatantrata ka vigyan filmostav”. Also i got selected as one of "75 Creative minds of tommorow" felicitated at the IFFI 52, 2021. I look forward to embark towards my dream of becoming filmmaker through this initiative.
