MYRIAD. Where we connect. | VR Experience
An artistic experience of a poetic journey following the paths of three migratory animals.

MYRIAD is a project about animal migration in the Anthropocene and has crafted a highly artistic and poetic virtual reality experience, based on scientific migratory data, that invites the visitor to experience our world as an interdependent system. We follow the migratory journeys of three animals: The Bald Ibis, the Arctic Fox, and the Green Sea Turtle, along wind and ocean currents, across continents and through soaring mountain ranges as they make their way around the globe.

From global to elemental, Myriad includes the science of interconnectedness into an outstanding artistic concept by creating a world out of carbon. Flexible and abundant, carbon is an element that forms the basis of all life on earth. MYRIAD’s visual concept makes use of this building block as a narrative and aesthetic link between individual elements and global networks to show how all life on earth is part of an endlessly connected cycle.

Carbon is the main creational and artistic element across all MYRIAD’s formats, generating atmospheres and landscapes, transporting movement and reconfiguring interaction in a constantly changing, living cosmos. Analog charcoal drawings, produced in the studio, are integrated in the digital VR environment and combined with carbon particle systems to form the world of MYRIAD. As they disintegrate and reassemble, they convey a feeling of organic vitality and a unified understanding of a world that is in constant change and in which everything is interconnected.

Experiencing natural cycles from an entirely new perspective catalyzes an intuitive, rich understanding of the natural world, while generating a newly responsible attitude towards the impact of human behavior on an individual and global scale. One journey at a time, MYRIAD’s immersive, unique experiences activate individuals’ connection to the world we share and the marvelous beings we share it with.

The VR experience MYRIAD is a project from the non-profit organization Interactive Media Foundation and Filmtank in co-creation with Miiqo Studios and Artificial Rome. With scientific support of Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (Natural History Museum Berlin) / Mediasphere for Nature, Waldrappteam / LIFE Northern Bald Ibis, Deutsches Meeresmuseum Stralsund (German Oceanographic Museum), University of Exeter, Ascension Island Government, Zoo in der Wingst, Norwegian Polar Institute, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research and RiffReporter. Supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

The VR Experience is part of the international crossmedia project MYRIAD. Where we connect.
This takes place in the form of an artistic and poetic virtual reality experience, a 360° 3 D documentary, a primetime TV documentary, a fulldome experience, an immersive, interactive exhibition, labs and citizen science projects, as well as other complementary formats. They all aim to reorient audiences’ relationship with the environment, and spark active engagement with local efforts to conserve the earth’s biodiversity.

Dirk Hoffmann
Dirk Hoffmann, head of artificial rome worked as a fine artist for ten years before turning to graphic design – a background that brings a wealth of unexpected and audacious visual imagery. He has been the driving force behind artifical rome since the very beginning.
As a person, who is strongly involved in graphics, drawing and painting, he focused on analog and digital spaces and in the end specialised in interaktive narratives. He is still in love with questions centered around the bigger picture. This could be transported in games, interaktive movies, installations or as he started, in a single image on the wall.
The independent music decade of the 80`s, the english paintings from the 60`s and the applied work from the russian constructivists from the 20`s inspire him.
He and his companies work for clients like BMW, Sennheiser and Siemens has been awarded with more than 40 international awards since 2014, as Cannes Lions, Art Directors Club, New York Festival, Red Dots Awards.

Director Statement

“Global challenges like the destabilization of ecological systems and the massive decline in biodiversity demand a radical reconfiguration of how we understand and interact with the natural world. Humans are but one small part of a vastly complex planet, and the way we influence our shared habitat has wide-reaching effects for all forms of life that asks for the development of alternative futures.

That is the basis and motivation for our project MYRIAD – a project that tells stories of migrating animals and the anthropogenic influence they face on their journeys. Migratory animals interact with and rely on complex global ecosystems to navigate vast distances and ensure their survival. Scientists are only beginning to understand just how sophisticated and interdependent these systems are.

Take the green sea turtle, one of the three protagonists of our VR experience. The sea turtle is one of the oldest and most fascinating creatures in the world. It has managed to survive for millions of years, although only one in a thousand hatchlings ever reaches adulthood. The reptile covers thousands of kilometers on its travels through the oceans, and it is still a mystery how it orients itself – using a magnetic field? Currents? Sense of smell underwater?

These stories show us our world of interconnectedness, asking for global responsibility in our shared world and a re-connection and realignment of ourselves with our natural environments.

In our VR experience, we explore this in a poetic, artistic way. What connects all life on Earth is also the central element of our visual language: carbon. In MYRIAD, analog charcoal drawings merge with digitally animated carbon particles to form landscapes and organisms that ultimately fall apart again. We show a world in constant flux and create an artistic space for imagination and emotion.

Our VR experience allows viewers to follow the story of our animals on a poetic and emotional journey, which has been scientifically verified. The installation focuses on the many changes to Earth that have resulted from human interference. This heightens visitors’ awareness of the explosive nature of global change and immerses them directly in the complex interrelationships of the Earth system."
