Moonplay Cinema is an artist-run project supporting women, nonbinary, and trans filmmakers and moving image artists, first and foremost. We screen, promote, and celebrate auteur-driven experimental, documentary and innovative narrative works from gender-diverse filmmakers.
We are now collecting submissions for our festival event scheduled for the week of April 7, 2024. We will present our program at Open Book's Performance Hall. We will also hold an event at Fresh Eye Gallery, an inclusive community art space located in South Minneapolis, and dedicated to showing works from emerging and mid-career artists. www.fresheyegallery.com
For this event, we are seeking films 30 minutes or less that have an intersectional feminist edge. Films that address issues of gender, sexuality, race, and other forms of inequality often missing from the mainstream media, and their relation to each other.
The film program will coincide with the release of “You're a Filmmaker, You're an Artist,” a zine highlighting women and gender-diverse artists who engage with the moving image form. The book will feature the voices of women and gender-diverse filmmakers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels, from emerging to established professionals, from experimental to narrative. Essays, profiles, and more will touch upon the professional practices of filmmakers.
Moonplay has a Featured Artist program to honor and recognize promising films made by innovative and creative filmmakers. Featured Artists will be invited to participate in a conversation on Where to From Here, our podcast program.
