MEMORY, MASK AND MACHINE IN THE THEATER OF ROBERT LEPAGE

During the covid lockdown we did this movie with unpublished interviews and images.

First Italian documentary on the award-winning French Canadian director and interpreter Robert Lepage
Memory, mask and machine are the three topics characterizing Robert Lepage's theater; we start from the three forms of memory: the autobiographical memory (the period of adolescence during the Revolution Tranquille), the geographic memory of childhood period (the Quebec inhabited by indigenous peoples) and the historical memory of his first man-shows (from Elsinore to Les aiguilles et opium). But Lepage's theater is also characterized by the scenographic machine made up of video projections which have a “role” on stage as a "double" of the character, as if it were a theatrical mask. In the video, professor Fernando Mastropasqua, an expert in contemporary theater, makes these three themes explicit, together with rare interviews with Robert Lepage and with set designer Carl Filion. The images of the shows are taken from the Ex Machina and Metropolitan (with kind permission).
