MAYA The Sacrifice is a film inspired by the writer, Maria Brenda Acopiado's personal experience as a full-time caregiver to her daughter, who battles with mental illness. The story incorporates Filipino traditions and culture to honor Maria's background and is dedicated to all caregivers who selflessly protect and support their loved ones, acknowledging their own mental health needs.

Set in a fantasy world, the movie follows a mother and daughter from a bloodline connected to a tribe of terrifying mythical creatures native to the Philippines. The mother embarks on an epic battle to save her daughter from imminent danger, demonstrating her unwavering love and determination, even if it means sacrificing her own life.

This emotionally charged story intertwines elements of fantasy, cultural heritage, and the challenges faced by caregivers. It aims to shed light on the sacrifices and resilience of those who care for others, while also serving as a homage to Filipino traditions.

Director Biography - Paolo Bertola, Maria Brenda Acopiado- (Co-director)

Maria is an accomplished Director, Screenwriter, Producer, and Actress. She founded Zatori Films, an independent production company in Chicago known for its diverse team of filmmakers, primarily Asian-American women.

Maria's journey from the Philippines to the US, overcoming challenges and adversity, has shaped her into a resilient individual. Her film projects have gained global recognition and numerous awards in film festivals.

Besides her creative pursuits, Maria is deeply involved in community service and advocacy. She's a driving force behind the No Small Potatoes Foundation, a newly-formed non-profit organization (501c3), promoting mental health awareness in underserved communities. Her dedication has been acknowledged through awards and invitations to speak at events.

Maria's motto, "Success is earned, not given," encapsulates the relentless pursuit of her dreams.
