MATRIARCH
It’s February in Scituate, Massachusetts. Maureen Callahan lays on her death bed. Her two adult daughters, Mary and Nancy, argue over who will inherit their mother’s fur coat. What could go wrong?
"Matriarch" is a dark comedy set in small town New England. Mary and Nancy struggle against each other, each of them trying to prove their love for their mother in their own way. A subtle comedy about stubborn women and power dynamics within families, "Matriarch" is a story about dealing with grief, pride, and loneliness: a coming-of-age tale for people who should have grown up a long time ago.

Julia Keelan Angley is a filmmaker based in Los Angeles, CA. She loves dark comedies, coming-of-age dramas, and stories about strong women. She is passionate about creating all kinds of women-centric media.
Originally from Boston, Julia studied creative writing and digital media on the east coast before relocating to LA to pursue her MFA in film directing at UCLA. She has been recognized with the Motion Picture Association Award (2017), the Norris Foundation Award (2018), and the Edie and Lew Wasserman Film Production Fellowship (2019) for her short film work.
In addition to directing her own projects, Julia is an editor and post production professional working in the Los Angeles area.
Matriarch is a film close to Julia's heart. Filmed during her time at UCLA Film School, Julia traveled home to Massachusetts to film. Working with local actors, local crew members, and lots of friends and family, together the team put together MATRIARCH.
The inspiration for this piece comes from Julia’s upbringing in a large New England family, where she loved being a fly on the wall as the adults argued. She grew up learning to appreciate the humor in dark moments and surrounded by the kind of strong, stubborn women that make up the cast of this film.
Julia is excited to bring this film to viewers everywhere, but especially home to her Boston community.
