MALLEUS

INTRO: "MALLEUS" is a PSICOLOGICAL THRILLER and may be a NEO-NOIR, about a woman dealing with a crazy killer and an unfair TAXES system. The two problems, in the story are connected.

The Story: Bea suffers from head trauma after surviving an attack which killed her husband. As she tries to cope, she slowly sees her house empty as tax collectors come in and out, slowly taking away her and her dead husbands belongings. Ghosts appear who all were murdered by the person who killed Bea's husband and hit her in the head. She struggles to remember until it becomes clear that the murders and taxes are connected and Bea is faced with confronting it.

Director Biography - Andrés Rafael ZABALA

He graduated in Cinema and TV and then trained as a cameraman. He has directed documentaries and reality shows for the TV channels Canale 5, RAIDUE, Studio Universal, Tele+ and Sky. As a director of commercials, he has made videos and spots for large national and international brands and institutions.
Andrés Rafael Zabala has also made 9 shorts, which have won him awards in national and international festivals. In 2014, he directed an independent feature film “A Dark Rome” (93 minutes, in English), which, besides being selected in a number of festivals abroad, also won the “Best Thriller of 2015” Award at the Macabre Faire Film Festival in New York. His book “Disobedient directors – The cinematography of yesterday and today beyond the rules”. (Edizioni Efesto – Rome) was published in 2020.
In 2022 he completed his second feature film “MALLEUS” (92 min – ROSSO18 srls – Italy)

Director Statement

"MALLEUS" is an indipendent film about a very big problem in Italy - a wrong taxes system. In the film all the story, all the characters are suffering one way or another of the injust taxes system. In order to protect my production company the taxes colecting agency has a fake name "TRIBUTA PAX"... just a fantasy name... but the problem, the sentences that the characters will say are real. In the poster and press kit there is a below the line: "Who is your enemy?".
Making "MALLEUS" I tried to match “gerne cinema” (killer, violence) with “auteur cinema” (social injustice theme, slow rhythm, introspective characters).
