MALETSATSI- Stage play
MALETSATSI; meaning ‘the sun mother/sun goddess. The sun gives life, light and nourishment. Maletsatsi explores the role of black African women, challenges and dynamics of keeping everything in balance in a contemporary family setting. The work looks at the issues of male patriarchy and gender roles. The connection with the ancestors is shown as the source of strength and healing. The story shows Maletsatsi’s journey from her innocent childhood throughout her emotional and physical pain. The strength and power of an everyday African woman is presented and highlighted in the work.
Maletsatsi in a dream state connected to her ancestry through her mother; Mosadihube, is taken through a journey of reflections of some of her life changing and some difficult moments in her life which leads to her healing. She is reassured of her strength and her valour. Live gives birth to new life.
