Lyrical Lens- An ode to a magical photographer
A photograph is the harmonious outcome of various arts and skills and ace photographer Nalini Baruah uses his unnatural technique and delivers justice to this art form continuously in the last eight decades. While many photographers have excelled or pioneered different art forms, shutter guru Nalini Baruah broke all glass ceilings through his nude photography and created a subtle language of aesthetics and boldness in a remote place of northeast India.
The beauty of a woman has always been a subject of wonder. To be able to create a subtle art form through nude photography was both unimaginable as well as difficult for an artist. Nude photography is an art, and despite being the path breaker in this field, through the medium of photographs, Baruah believes that he narrates stories, writes poems, composes lyrics, and expresses the vocabulary of all things created in this world through his lenses.
What began as an accidental hobby with a chance encounter of a camera received as a gift in the 1930’s, his hobby transformed into a serious passion with him capturing historic pictures of the Indo-Chinese war, breath-taking pictures of nature, human portraits, political events among others. It was however in the weekly newspaper ‘Nilachal’, where his first nude photograph was published and having shot close to over 300,000 photos in his eight-decade-long career, his tryst with nude photography stands out for the sheer quality of boldness and beauty all put together in this poetic rendition, “Lyrical lenses” directed by Prof. Ankuran Dutta.
