Lulu and the Girls of Americus, Georgia 1963
“Lulu and the Girls of Americus, Georgia 1963”
This is the documentary that for the first time shed light on an unknown tragic story about the abuse of black children. You might have heard online of "the Stockade Girls" or "the Stolen Girls of Leesburg", or even seen a quilt created in their memory. This is the original film that started it all. This is one of those truly untold stories of the civil rights era. It accurately details how young people in the small rural town of Americus, Georgia got involved in a civil rights demonstration against a local theater. Once arrested thirty-two girls were isolated and imprisoned in a deserted civil war era prison for forty-five days. We interviewed many of the surviving women who open up for the first time about what happened that painful summer of 1963 and how their lives changed. We also interviewed two civil rights icons, Congressman John Lewis and Julian Bond, who not only remember the incident, but reflected passionately and put into historical perspective the plight of the young girls. This documentary had a very limited release in 2003. It is being rereleased in 2021-2022 with never before seen footage. It was originally filmed in 4:3. A must see by audiences worldwide!
