Ce la farò (I will make it)
More than 20 years ago, Giovanni made a promise to his mother: he would get out of mafia and drugs. Today he lives in front of a circus, where he works as a guardian. Every night, he reflects about his past in order to move forward with a last desire: come back to his mum's grave and tell her that he managed.

Special Session: Opening
Loreto Saiz (Burgos, 1996) is a filmmaker and researcher at the Carlos III University of Madrid. Her first documentary (Espero, 2019) was selected for festivals such as SEMINICI, Medina del Campo, BCN Human Rights Festival, Camera Image (Poland), Global University Film Awards (Hong Kong), FiSahara (Algeria) and HUMANO Film Festival (Mexico), among others. The short film was included in the catalogue New Spanish Shorts 2020 published by the ICAA.
That same year she published the video-essay Correspondencias (2019) in the audiovisual essay magazine TECMERIN. Since then she has worked for several NGOs in different European countries writing social projects focused on film and visual culture.
She is currently developing the fiction short film A street view.
Ce la farò was born from Giovanni s need to turn the page after so many years struggling to get out of drugs and the mafia. We decided to accompany him in his intimate journey into the past, in his process of acceptance and redemption, and in his most terrifying challenge: facing the present.
With this film we want to question the glamour that usually surrounds the figure of the mafia gangster in movies, presenting the real person behind the stereotype. In the hierarchy of mafia organizations there are many Giovannis underneath all those Al Capones: people who end up being part of a criminal system because they are addicted to the same drugs that the organization itself puts into circulation. In portraying Giovanni, we do not want to fall into the ghoulish description of the mafioso, but to explore the oppressor s point of view from a human perspective.
Our will is to show that, first, there is an alternative. There is a way out from the mafia and drug dependence, and Giovanni is the proof. Second, we want to point out how both things -criminal organizations and drugs- are closely linked. And finally, we aim to denounce how the mafia ruins even the lives of the people belonging to it.
