Director Statement

In "Kamukan?" we set out to explore and expose the intricate boundaries between genuine affection, unrequited love, and blinding obsession. The film studies the social constructs of love and the different hues of masculinity.

The central character leads a desolate life despite having many people around. In an era where technology helps bring people closer, we find Ishak's reliance on stalking as his primary connection to his love, Anjana, both thought-provoking and unsettling. We strived to emphasise the absurdity of such behaviour, using humour as a tool to unveil the problematic nature of Ishak's actions. Through Ishak's eyes, we mirror the distorted lens of romantic idealism, highlighting how easily infatuation can mutate into a dangerous obsession.

Using a genre-bending exploration of filmmaking techniques like found footage, documentary, satire, and fiction and presented as a nearly finished film, in The Lover?, we have tried to weave a canvas that blurs the chasm between the reel and the real.
