Love Brings Us Home

Love Brings Us Home is a portrait of the elderly couple Wies and Bert. Over the course of one year, the documentary shows how life begins to change for Wies and Bert and how they gradually lose their autonomy until they are faced with the painful decision of leaving their home and moving into a retirement home.

Shortly after celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary, they must say goodbye to each other in unexpected ways; Wies’ memory is unravelling due to dementia, and she is not authorized to return home to Bert after a routine visit to the hospital. Now, for the first time in decades, Bert lives alone, holding onto each memory of their life together that Wies forgets. While his terminal cancer and his age-related disabilities make it impossible for him to visit Wies without help, he is confronted with the most difficult decision he has ever had to make.

Director Statement

When I tell the stories of ordinary people, I always want to tell the big story behind them or highlight something that affects us all. In relation to the film ‘Love brings us home’, we are all affected, initially perhaps by our own family, but sooner or later we have to deal with these life issues ourselves, how we want to grow old, live in old age and how we want to die.
