Lost
What hides in the un-walked corridors of a hospital basement? In this hand-drawn 2D animated horror short, follow along with a mother and her child into the depths below the hospital as they discover their ever-present shadows… Weren’t as benign as originally perceived…
Starting as a seemingly average scenario, things take a deep dive for the worst once the pair find themselves stranded in the dark. The horror taking hold and a sinking feeling setting in as the corridors themselves begin to twist and work against the characters. The stakes are high, and it is a race against the one thing that always travels with them.
With a striking monochromatic colour palette and textured line art, each scene comes to life with every line and stroke providing a constant sense of movement. There is also constant tension, and unnerving themes that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout the film. It will leave you questioning, ‘was that really there or was it just the shadows?’.

Emerald is an aspiring storyboard artist and writer, and during her time at Swinburne University of Technology studying the Bachelor of Animation, she directed a short student film called Lost, allowing her to delve more into the inner workings of the animation pipeline. She loves character-based stories and creating a strong atmosphere in her narratives to connect with the audience. In her spare time, she enjoys writing short stories and embroidery and she one day would like to try animating with embroidery.
Lost is a film stemming from the simple question, ‘what if?’ A few years ago, my Mum and I got locked out of the elevators in the basement level of a hospital and it was a very surreal and eerie experience. So, drawing from the innate ‘creepiness’ of hospitals I thought of the possibility of ghosts or other ghouls that could lurk in the depths of hospitals, what if something had chased my Mum and me? That is how the idea for the film came to be, a simple horror story loosely based on true events.
