Loss Rendered
During his final session of the immersive, online, digital bereavement service, Loss Rendered, Dylan attempts to say goodbye to the avatar of his deceased girlfriend, Geneve, and move on with his life. However, Geneve's programming makes it difficult for Dylan to let go.
Goodbyes are easier said than done, moving on is hard, and in the future Grief can be addicting.

Samuel Greco is a London-based American actor, who also has interest in writing and directing for the screen.
Originally from Kansas, Samuel moved to New York City to pursue acting. He trained at the Actors Studio Drama school, while also performing in amateur stage productions, short films and web-series. Following his time in NYC, Samuel moved to London and trained at LAMDA. After graduation, he moved back to the USA and performed in his first professional theatre production as Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby in Breckenridge, Colorado. Shortly thereafter the pandemic hit, and all future productions of his were cancelled.
Samuel spent the pandemic lock-down in London, and it was during this time that he decided to hone his skills as a screenwriter, director, and filmmaker. He completed an MA in Filmmaking from the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, England. His graduate films include Loss Rendered (writer/director) and Inseparable (director).
Loss Rendered is a cautionary tale about technologies that don't yet exist, and one young man's experience with them as he copes with the grief caused by losing the girl he loved.
It’s a story that looks at the grieving process through a slightly different lens: addiction. Addiction to the ones we love. Addiction to the past. And Additiction to a service that is purposely trying to take advantage of that little part inside of human beings that yearns for what they cannot have.
In recent years the curtain has been pulled back to show the innerworkings of how social media and internet-based applications and websites are engineered to pray on its users' behaviour, emotions, and psychology. I learned that there are techologies being developed right now that will allow people to interact with digital versions of their deceased loved ones...for a small fee. And I wondered how that technology might actually impact one user's experience of grief, if it is developed in the same way social media has been engineered.
What I’m most proud about regarding this production is the fact that it was truly an entire student production: we collaborated with other departments within our university for all of the graphic design, product design, and art department needs; we collaborated with students from the Berlin School of Popular Arts for the sound design and composition; the actors were recent graduates from LAMDA, whom I met while at drama school; our production designer managed to design and build a killer set within our university sound-studio; and all editing was done by students, using UCA’s equipment.
The guidance from our professors was immensely helpful. I’m thankful for their time, patience, wisdom, and instruction during such a difficult time that’s been COVID-19.
I hope you enjoy our film, Loss Rendered.
