Look The Part

Sam is a disabled cleaner working in a large theatre who has a passion to be a dancer, but she's afraid to step into the light. When Peaches (her magical inner-diva-cum-drag queen) materialises at night, Sam’s creativity takes flight. She rips up a daring dance-number, to the rhythm of The Cat Empire’s beats. Look The Part, is the story of talent defying expectation, and magic transforming reality.

Director Statement

Look the Part, evolved through workshops with 13 intellectually disabled students and myself as teacher/ filmmaker, @ Bus Stop films. The concept of a fantasy/ dance film with a magical drag queen was the core premise for the film. Six disabled students were cast in the nine acting roles (including the lead actor, Ellen Maher, and all the backup dancers). A rigours rehearsal period over zoom, including choreographed dance routines followed. The process of film-making was truely inclusive with the concept, actors and crew all heavily driven by the involvement of disabled film-makers and their storytelling perspectives. Having worked in documentary with marginalised groups for over 20 years this was a detour from my usual documentary content. However it remains, my most enjoyable /creative experiences to date. The enthusiasm, passion and inspiration of its participants was unparalleled.
