Long Play

A completist search for vinyl leads to strange encounters with other collectors and success, perhaps.

Long Play is the fictional story of LP collectors and their attachment to black vinyl discs, the enduring format for recorded sound. It is also one man's search for the last LP for his collection of a little remembered country singer from Southland/Murihiku, New Zealand. Leonard Peter Simpson is interested in the stories. These he finds in the words, telephone numbers, names, stains and inscriptions added to the covers and the music, enhanced by the crackle, hiss and jumps the discs have developed over time. These conversations, adapted for the film, are heard in the shops and places where music enthusiasts, LP collectors and other strange characters gather. It is possible that the audience, whatever they collect, will find people just like themselves in the murky world of LP collectors.
