Romain Picard is a young director. At first, he wanted to express himself through video games, that’s why he studied computer science. After graduating from college, he worked mostly in the management application.
After 4 years, he decided to change his professional life and started to study cinema. At first, he wanted to express himself as a writer. In 2017, he wrote “Ad Lucem”, a short film produced by 3IS. Then he realized that he also wanted to be a director. In 2018, he was part of the writing team for the TV show “Eve”, produced by 3IS and created by Manon Durrieu.
He was the director of episode 2. In early 2019, he directed a clip working with the composer Qlay.
For this music video, I chose to create a western. I was inspired by the music composed by Quentin Gendrot, a founding member of Qlay. When I was listening to music, I first visualized images from western movies. I think it was because of its rhythm and instruments, mostly the guitar.
The story I originally wanted to tell was a common revenge movie. But after some discussions with Quentin Gendrot, we modified the script in order to better suit his personal universe. That’s why I chose to introduce the idea of dreams. Then the concept of loop came into my mind. I could repeat the end of the main character, showing her death in different scenarios, to reinforce the idea that violence does not solve the problems.
I have been really inspired by the movies of Sergio Leone, mostly for his aesthetics, the beautiful images and the way he shoots.
That’s why I chose not to use a hand-held camera. In order to transpose the western universe, I chose to have a sharp contrast between the highlights and the shadows and to saturate the color palette. In France (Nouvelle Aquitaine), we don’t have deserts, so I shot on the beach and used the colors to create the illusion of a desert. There are two important reasons why I wanted to create such a project. The first reason is that this kind of project was a challenge, and I wanted to work on a project that would be difficult before graduating. The second reason is that western stories are not part of French history, so we don’t have a lot of movies or music videos like this in France.
