Living On Mars

Synopsis
The song is about a couple in a failed relationship. They are searching for the lost life that once made their relationship warm and fulfilling. The cold, dry and harsh conditions on Mars are used as a metaphor for their day to day experience. The on-going “search for life” implies hope for its rebirth and is symbolized by the search for life on Mars. The couple no longer communicate affectively and live separate lives for the most part. The video shows a glimpse into their limited day to day interaction.

The Symbolic Backstory
Most of the NASA video is associated with the Perseverance Mars Rover. The robotic rover is currently on Mars searching for signs of past life in Jezero Crater, once a lake fed by a river. In the distant past, Mars was a wet and warm place with a thick atmosphere. Life could have existed there. Now Mars is dry and cold with a barren landscape and harsh climate. Any past life has been lost. The rover is looking for signs of that past life.

The couple in the video now live a cold and harsh existence together, looking for lost love across their shared barren landscape. They both fear being alone.

Interactive communication between Earth and Mars is impossible due to a 20+ minute one way trip for radio signals. A single question and answer would require a 40+ minute round trip. Communication is essentially one directional at any given time.

The couple no longer communicate affectively. Communication is usually “one directional” (or download) accompanied by poor listening.

The story opens with one of the couple home alone watching the landing of Perseverance Rover on Mars.
