Living History - 1000 Parker
Against all odds, a remnant of Vancouver's industrial history survives as a sprawling, enigmatic labyrinth of wood, brick and cement. Originally built by the Restmore Company it became home to western Canada’s largest producer of furniture, thriving in the first half of the last century when Vancouver was a major manufacturing centre. But by the late 1950’s, Restmore was in decline and the building was shuttered in 1967. The early 70’s brought a renewed but temporary use as a warehouse; the old building was slated for demolition. Today it is occupied by painters, sculptors, potters, photographers, and woodworkers who worship the structure for its open spaces, high ceilings and the odd ghost. Living History - 1000 Parker chronicles the history & salvation of the iconic building as told by a handful of its current artists along with the grandson of the original owner. Tragically (and ironically), the thing that has ensured its survival for over 100 years- zoning bylaws- are now at the root of its imminent demise.
