Listening to Architecture

A sequence of drawings which are loosely connected, and drawn associatively in an imaginary artist's sketchbook, which include individual architectural elements of the Haus des Rundfunks. The gradual animation of these images allows the viewer to witness the process of creation. The drawings may follow the rhythm of the brickwork, the pattern of a light reflection or the curved shape of the staircase.
With these images the viewer can hear a recording of the Sonata for Violin Solo, op. 31 No. 2 by Paul Hindemith. Like the building, a work of early 20th century modernism, the piece reflects a high musical spontaneity. The interpreter is the violinist Juliane Manyak.
Within this open form Faroqhi and Manyak aim to build on the euphoria of the first spontaneous radio reports, which often were rather unplanned in the early years of radio: the film offers images which echo the mood of the immediate and improvised expression of that time.
