Like Maddah

“Like Maddah” is a comedic web series about three generations of iron-willed local Japanese mothers and daughters. The protagonist, Amy Shiraishi-Knudsen, is a child psychologist who fled to Minnesota twenty years ago for college and never looked back. But then her husband is offered a 3-year job of a lifetime in Hawaii. Aimee reluctantly agrees because she can finally be a stay-at-home mother to her newborn and she can work on her troubled relationship with Ella, her rebellious 14-year-old daughter. She agrees on one condition; she must live in a gated community so that her relatives, mostly her mother, Dot, cannot just pop over. While she wants her mother to respect her privacy, she has trouble understanding why her daughter always has her door shut.

“Like Maddah” pokes fun at the dynamics and politics of the Shiraishi clan, a large local Japanese family. The women are incredibly controlling and intrusive with those closest to them, but they are also staunchly loyal supporters. Their power lies in their elaborate network of friends, family, and neighbors who collect, weaponize, and systematically disseminate gossip.
