Life in Pictures Filmmaking Competition

What is ageing? Does it mean ‘getting old’? Is it ‘getting older’? Or is it simply ‘growing’?

The Life in Pictures filmmaking competition is a unique collaboration between government, the arts and the community that's centered on stimulating discussion about ageing, celebrating achievements of those who are ageing and diving into cultures each who have a different perspective on what it is to age.

Relevance in the workforce, finances, living in a cashless society, sex and sexuality, relationships to family and community, housing, health care, vulnerability to elder abuse and myriad other forces come into play. Like-wise the contribution people who are now seniors make and have made in building the communities we inhabit globally and locally are not always acknowledged or recognised. Their stories of triumph, achievement and of course struggle are forces that surround them and inform us.

This film competition is designed to raise and enhance awareness of the rewards and challenges of ageing in the community. It provides a platform on which to build community discussion, reflection, education and interaction. It's aimed at all sectors of the community from the school aged to the mature aged and is designed to encourage creative approaches that may present positive – and potentially critical – perspectives of age and ageing in our community.

With the diversity of the community base that embraces all nationalities and cultures from first Australians to new arrivals we hope that the films created for the competition will facilitate discussion, interaction and understanding about aspects of ageing, specifically focusing on the creative contributions of seniors in our community.

ENTRY & ELIGIBILITY

- Entries are restricted to Western Australian residents or registered organisations only.
- There is no cost to enter. All costs associated with the production of each entry is the applicant’s responsibility and cannot be claimed.
- Films must be up to two minutes long not including credits.
- The film cannot have been commercially released or submitted to any other short film festival worldwide.
- All films must be made specifically for the Life in Pictures competition.
- Films of any type – for example documentary, fiction, animation, or experimental - are welcomed.
- Films are to be submitted into only one of three categories: Under 17 years old, 18-59 years old, 60+ years old
- Entries in the Under 17 category require guardian permission. If the application is from a school, a teacher is suitable.
- Entries are welcomed from individuals, groups and organisations including schools, local governments, nursing homes, community groups, film schools, university groups, families and any other collective.
- Organisations should enter the category that best reflects the median age of the film’s production team.
- Multiple entries from groups or individuals are welcomed.
- Private or for-profit organisations are welcome to enter Life in Pictures.
- Revelation reserves the right to not consider films which include deliberate product placement / branding for an agenda for financial gain of the company, thisinclude logos in credits (although written credit is acceptable) and “location” product placement or any other visual representations.
- Private or for-profit organisations are encouraged to consider donating prizes awarded through Life in Pictures to a not for profit or community organisation.
- Entries can be submitted online via the Life in Pictures FilmFreeway account or by any other online platform. Details are provided on the entry form. The entry form also allows you to submit via your own YouTube, Vimeo or other link.
- Online is the preferred entry process to ensure a smooth assessment process, however entries will also be accepted on DVD, Bluray, thumb-drive or other hard forms.
- All entries must be accompanied by an entry form to be considered.
- If submitting multiple entries, each entry must include a separate entry form.

JUDGING & SELECTION

- Films in each category will be assessed by four judges made up of a representative from each category plus a representative from the Department of Local Government and Communities.
- Each category will have a different judging panel.
- A shortlist of five entries will be made from each category.
- From each group of five shortlisted films a winning entry will be selected.
- From each group of five shortlisted films an Ambassador’s Choice Award will be selected. - - This film is decided by competition Ambassador Jenny Davis, 2016 Juniper WA Seniors Champion of the Year.
- The Ambassador’s Choice Award will go to a film that is judged best to deliver the aims of the competition. A film may be deemed winner of their category as well as receive the Ambassador’s Choice Award. In this case, the film will receive two separate prizes.
- With the selection structure, there will be up to six films provided with prizes.
Revelation, Department of Local Government and Communities, competition Ambassador and the panelists will strictly not engage in any correspondence regarding the selection process.

SCREENING & USAGE

- All winning films will be screened during the 2017 Revelation Perth international Film Festival.
- The five shortlisted films in each category will be made available in a special category on REVonDEMAND
- Ownership of the all entered films will be dually held between the entrant and Department of Local Government and Communities.
- Entered films may be used in whole or part by the Department of Local Government and Communities in a public education program for a period of three years following announcement of the competition winners. This includes on the Department of Local Government and Communities’ website.
- Usage outside of public education contexts (i.e. advertising etc.) will be negotiated with entrant on a case by case basis. No payment will be offered for this type of use.
- Entrants may be contacted by the Department of Local Government and Communities for an evaluation survey regarding the Life in Pictures competition. Your details will not be shared or given to any other organsiation.
- Unless opting out, your contact details will subscribe you to Revelation Film Festival monthly newsletters.

MEDIA

- Winners in each category may be required to take part in media opportunities. This includes media interviews and photo opportunities with the Minister for Seniors and Volunteering, Ministers from related portfolios and local members of parliament.
- The Department of Local Government and Communities will announce the names of winners and publish their information on the department’s website and social media channels as well as provide this information to the media. This information may also be published on the Revelation Film Festival website.
- All individuals and groups taking part in the competition are not authorised to release information on finalists or winners prior to the Department of Local Government and Communities.
- All individuals and groups taking part in the competition should be mindful that their social media activity does not reflect negatively on the competition.
School students and other minors taking part in the competition will require guardian permission before taking part in photographic or media opportunities. Competitors aged 18 years and over should inform Revelation Perth International Film Festival on entry if they do not wish to take part in publicity opportunities related to the competition.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

- Winning films will be converted by the Revelation Film Festival into cinema-ready files at Revelation’s cost.
- Films should be shot to the highest possible resolution with the available equipment. This provides high-definition quality – remember if your film is a winner it’s going to be up on the big screen!
- Films can be shot on any format – Phone, tablet, Super8 or anything that can record and store a moving image.
- Revelation will undertake all necessary film classification paperwork and lodgment.
- Once selected films should be supplied to the festival on a digital format to the highest possible resolution - 1080 p (1920 x 1080) is highly desirable. This will be discussed with winners.
- If selected in the shortlisted films in each category you will be asked to supply at least two stills from the film – one being portrait, the other landscape. Be sure to take some while you‘re making the film.
- Revelation or Department of Local Government and Communities are not liable for any accident or other incident and/or liability related to the production of the film.
