Let there be darkness
A documentary on the effects of light pollution on flora, fauna and men. With more than half of the world’s population now living in cities, 3 out of every 4 people in cities have never experienced the wonderment of pristinely dark skies. Migratory birds migrate at night and use the stars for navigation. Artificial light make them lose their way. According to the International Dark Sky Association, frogs, toads, zebrafish, bees, butterflies, salmon, bats, as well as owls and many other birds are affected by light pollution. Decline in insect populations globally could leave the world with more pests and fewer pollinators, both of which outcomes could threaten food supplies. Stargazers and environmentalists aren’t the only ones losing out due to the city lights. Studies all over the world have shown that long-term exposure to bright artificial lights can affect our body’s clock – our circadian rhythm - and disrupt our sleep patterns. About 80% of the world’s population today lives in places polluted by artificial light.
This apart, the film dwells on the aesthetic aspects of darkness vis a vis light. Told in a poetic manner, this film may make you sit up and ponder on an oft relegated subject. Let’s enjoy the dark of the night as we sit looking at the stars with chirping of crickets around.

Being an Indian Police Service Officer you may picture me as a harried, obsessed man in uniform. But I try to straddle all mediums: a writer of fiction & text books, newspaper columnist, illustrator, graphic novelist, elocutionist, wildlife photographer, docu filmmaker, actor and a compulsive runner. As a self-taught painter, I have been holding exhibition of my paintings regularly in and out of Kolkata City.
You may wonder where I find time in my hectic schedule. I attribute it to my urge. As Albert Einstein aptly put it: True art is characterized by an irresistible urge in the creative artist.
