Director Statement

As slices of life kept passing by, I generally kind of did nothing during the pandemic. The goofing leads me to meet many other dissonant portraits of young people in China today who engage in aimless recreation.

Surreal lockdown, unprecedented social isolation... Society seems to have stopped its footing. The crack between reality and ideals weighs heavily as cultural codes are substituted ceaselessly with conservatism and mediocrity caused by the pandemic. Youths in China are growing disillusioned and frustrated by the mounting uncertainties and lack of economic opportunities.

Inevitably, they are haunted by indescribable sentimentality. They are muttering about their hesitancy and agony, meanwhile being dispensable to society. Their bitterness, cynicism, and spitefulness become a sense of their own tragedy and nihilism. They joke around to delude and evade the surroundings and slowly fall like a feather.

Thus, I'm willing to use this melancholic daydream in a theatre to uninhibitedly assert the presence of me and my generation of young Chinese. Asserting our alienation, unaccountable ponderation, and introspection of Chinese youths nowadays. I hope this short becomes a joyous speck of levity to all my friends: Don't be destroyed by indifference or defeated by boredom and never assent to mediocrity.
