Directors Statement:

Let There Be Drums was a big project for me. It wasn't my first of course but I think it's the one that needed the most work done on it for it to be as good as I intended it to be.

With an overall 6 month period of pre-production; writing ideas, concept art, getting the song itself recorded and covered by the buckleys with their own instruments, and getting the overall screenplay and storyboard done in that time frame.
finding the perfect editor for this project wasn't due to how much work was necessary for it to become the vision I wanted. But after going through numerous editors at SAE, the one that stood out the most was someone who wasn't even a student at SAE; My best mate Victor. He's editing a lot of things over the past 2 years but I didn't know if he had what it took to edit a music video...
Until a work-related project came along in March-April, in which I had to shoot and direct a music video. I didn't have that many options for an editor, so I got my friend Victor to do it. It was while we were working on that said video together that I truly realised how well he could turn my dream of a project into a reality.

Production Shoot finally rolled around and we started off with a Pre-Viz. Although I had written/drawn the specific shots I wanted, I still had to check whether or not it would work. It wasn't a complete success but I did what I do best; Problem Solving. Whilst the Buckley's were on their brake, I quickly wrote up a couple of new shots that would work much better. Things went pretty smoothly and I was ready to shoot the actual thing. In the two days that we shot this video, I still utilised the shots I had previously thought of but also included shots that came to mind only then and there. That's what I love about directing and filming your very own project, you have so more creative options and the opportunity to have control over those options in a really non-stressful and satisfying way.

When post-production hit, I was ready. I already knew where everything was going to be and it showed. The fact that the editor and I were very close friends, allowed us to be in sync with each other all threw out this last stage of the production. He has lots of fantastic ideas of where a shot could go in an incredibly respective way.

Overall, Let There Be Drums has become my baby of sorts. I put my stress levels to their limit but it was all worth it in the end because, with the incredible help of my friend Victor, we created something truly special...
