Growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts and dreaming always of moving to the big city to pursue dance, Nicole Baker did indeed come to New York City, launching a successful career in choreography and dance.
Today, Nicole is known and respected among her world-wide network of professional colleagues as much for her entrepreneurial drive as a marketer as for her skills in the world of dance. Nowadays she is doing even more, merging her passion for dance with the worlds of storytelling, music, imagery and filmmaking.
As Nicole progressed through the normal levels of dance training during high school and college, she earned a BFA Summa Cum Laude from Adelphi University, along the way performing in works by Martha Graham, Orion Duckstein, Takehiro Ueyama, Paul Taylor, and Jiří Kylián.
Moving to New York City proper, Nicole found herself being chosen to dance nationally and internationally as a professional. Notably, she was selected to serve as the Rehearsal Director for Eryc Taylor Dance, is a founding member of ChrisBellDances, and recently was chosen to travel to Mumbai, India for a three-week tour to perform in an exclusive industrial site performance with internationally renowned choreographer Nikos Lagousakos for the Aditya Birla Group Awards.
Nicole’s commercial credits are impressive and suggest why her creative focus is widening to merge the arts of filmmaking, dance production and storytelling with dance itself. They include starring in a print ad for Rowenta fans, a Hershey Park Promo, as featured dancer in a Hendrik's Gin release, and a PBS ALL ARTS Climate Artists Series where her work with Eryc Taylor Dance was a featured episode.
Nicole has likewise been a featured dancer in Louis van Amstel's La Blast for DailyBurn, a performer in Amazon's The Marvelous Ms. Maisel, and has been background performer for popstar Meredith O'Connor during New York Fashion Week and the United Nations Youth Summit. There is more: she has worked for project-based choreographers Jaclyn Walsh (KEIGWIN + COMPANY), Amy Marshall, Kristina Harris, Hollye Bynum, Natalia Roberts, Joelle Consentino, and MaryJohn Frank.
Nicole imparts the complete essence of her career achievements to “Let Go” , where viewers will get to see first-hand how a filmmaker-dance artist can capture intimate moments of inner thought in a visual capsule of imagination.
I believe there is dance in everything - the way we walk, and talk, and even the way we crave our coffee in the morning. There are such profoundly intimate movements in our everyday lives that, with imagination and drive, we can use to make dance accessible and relatable to so many more people. That is my focus: striving to produce works of personal narrative that inspire a much larger audience to join with us and reach beyond the boundaries of a too-often insular world of dance.
