Les Lis
Les Lis (“The Lilies”) is part of a new series of works by Jacek Ludwig Scarso, playfully exploring the choreography of flower arranging and the concept of staged nature. Created as a sustained static shot, theatrically lit and designed both as single play video or durational video-loop, it owes to baroque aesthetics in its painterly composition and in the use of chiaroscuro. As three men compete to get intoxicated by the beauty and scent of a bunch of lilies, we are left to wonder whether they are really attracted to the flowers, to themselves or to the viewer. A symbol of mortality and sexuality, the lily here becomes an object of ironic devotion and decadent pleasure.
