Le nouveau CHUM - Épilogue
One of North America’s largest academic medical centers, the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montreal (CHUM) gathers three aging hospitals into a single urban site. Through its design, the CHUM was envisioned to act not only as a place of healing, but as a place of gathering. Not solely as a closed loop within the urban fabric, but as a generous public space. Following over ten years of design and construction by more than 400 professionals in architecture, The Epilogue aims at providing a space of contemplation and respite to the viewers though a day in the CHUM’s life.
The project for the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) is one of the largest healthcare construction projects in North America, with 772 individual rooms, 39 operation rooms and over 400 clinics and examination rooms. Designed by CannonDesign + NEUF architect(e)s, it is the product of over 10 years’ work and the largest public-private partnership undertaken to date in Canada. The mandate called for a 3,000,000 ft² hospital complex to be integrated into a four-block area of downtown Montreal, without affecting existing infrastructure at the site. The Epilogue by Raphael Thibodeau and Paysages captures the end of the construction / official opening in 2021 of the 100 year project in the making for Québec.

Through the still and moving image, I seek today to document and communicate architecture as well as the people who inhabit and animate it. I hope that there emerges an assumed subjectivity of photography that involves and activates the curiosity of the observer, like the one that drives me each time the shutter is triggered.
Since obtaining a master's degree in architecture in 2014, Raphaël Thibodeau has accumulated experience in private practice as well as photographic collaborations. His work has won numerous accolades from his peers.
